Generous Rotary and private sponsorship for workshops in Red Hill Informal Settlement (2012 to 2014), Clanwilliam (2015 to 2020), Stanford and Hermanus (2021–2026) and Calitzdorp (2025 and 2025) has enabled us to test all our reading material with underprivileged and under-resourced readers. We have given hundreds of workshops to thousands of children.
All of this (until 2025, when we started working in schools) has been with children on a volunteer basis, at weekends and in school holidays – and we are always oversubscribed.
The workshops enable us to see, very quickly, what works and what doesn’t. The indescribable smile on a child’s face when they first read for real meaning is a reward beyond price.
